As a result of coronavirus, Brits started excessively stockpiling food including pasta, rice and canned goods – as well as toilet rolls and cleaning supplies.
This left supermarket shelves bare, which ultimately meant that vulnerable people and key workers had very little food.
Even though Boris Johnson assured the public that there would be enough food to go round if everybody shopped sensibly and used home delivery slots when possible, many stores are still struggling to cope with demand.
And since food doesn’t last forever, what will we do when we’re running low?
At some point we’ve all thought ‘how in the hell am I going to rustle something up here?’ as you stare at a random assortment of ingredients from your fridge or cupboards – but we’ve got just the solution.
There is a free app that will supply you with tons of recipes based on what you have in the house, even if the only appetising thing left sitting in your fridge is a block of Parmesan.
Yes, you might only have one ingredient, but SuperCook will make it work.
When you load up the app – SuperCook in the Apple Store – it will ask you if you’d like to get started straight away or gives you the option of creating an account.
It will then show your ingredients page. It’s laid out into 20 categories which are: dairy, vegetables, fruits, baking and grains, added sweeteners, spices, meats, fish, seafood, condiments, oils, seasoning, sauces (what’s the difference between a sauce and a condiment?) legumes, alcohol, soup, nuts, dairy alternatives, desserts and snacks, and beverages.
All you do is select which ingredients you already have in the house, and as you do this you will see the number of items included increase at the bottom of the screen.
Then you select ‘See Recipes’ on the right-hand side, and it will start building you some tasty dishes.
It really is as simple as that.
It will also ask you if you have any of the suggested add-on ingredients so that it can offer even more recipes.
These suggestions are key because it’s likely that you have many more ingredients than you thought, especially ones that you didn’t think would go well together.
You can also press the microphone button at the very top, and dictate as many ingredients as you like at once, which helps you save some time.
SuperCook has a website too if you prefer that over the app – either way, it’s incredibly simple to use.
